Do you know who you are? Let Truth Expose the Lie

,

Do you know who you are? Let truth Expose the Lie is the new and third part of this “identity series.” In Kiss Insecurity Goodbye (part 1), we unwrapped how our flawed thinking about God shapes our identity. And in Uncover Your True Identity (part 2), we discussed our identity as a child of the King. Today it’s imperative that I highlight how the truth (light) can uncover the lies(darkness) you’ve learned about yourself and God over the years.

God’s light always shines on lies and exposes the truth. This exposure happens when you seek Him with all your heart by placing Him in the position of Lord over your life.

TEMPORARY OR FULL-TIME CHRISTIAN

I worked as a temporary employee, off and on, for several years. That meant I did not hold the title as an employee of any of the companies I was assigned work. Although I worked side-by-side with the client’s permanent employees, I didn’t obtain any of the benefits/privileges they were allowed to partake.

I looked the part, and that was it because I was not one of them. The temp agencies I worked for typically offered less than stellar benefits. But I couldn’t even qualify for them until I completed a specified number of working hours for whatever agency I worked an assignment. Once I did qualify for the lackluster temp benefits, their retirement plan (if offered), PTO, and health insurance didn’t even compare on the scale with that of the full-time permanent employee.

The point I’m making with all of this temp talk is this; if you are saved by grace (John 3:16-17, Romans 10:9-10), unlike that of a temporary worker, you have riches and benefits as a permanent Kingdom child. However, the only way to know, understand, or experience them is to walk in the Spirit by developing a dedicated relationship with God.

So, I pose this question, how can you discover the truth about your identity or what God has planned for your life if you only relate to Him from a distance, part-time, temporarily, or when you need something?

Like for real, would you stay in a relationship with a boyfriend/girlfriend that claims to be in love with you, but their actions prove otherwise? Would you consider someone to be a good friend if they only come around when it’s convenient for them?

A spiritually mature person would not accept this kind of inconsistency in a relationship/friendship as it is unreliable and unstable.

If you won’t accept this kind of relationship, why do we expect to have a healthy and solid relationship with Christ when we are unreliable and unstable? Inconsistency is not trustworthy.

God is trustworthy. He should not be some afterthought in our hour of desperation. He is God, and He shares His glory with no one. Put no god(idol) before Him. He is not to come second to anyone or anything, including your spouse, children, boyfriend/girlfriend, work, career, sports, your business, pride, idols, or even your local church busyness.

Tiptoeing around this issue of prioritizing God won’t help you uncover your identity. In order to rest in your identity, your security must lie in Christ alone. You must decide if you fit the description of the temp employee. Temps fit in and look the part but are not a part of the company. Permanent employees are considered a critical part of the team. It’s the difference in hiding out in darkness or under the light where God is.

1 John 1:5-7 NIV says, This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is lightin him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.

We must exhibit honesty where we are opening the door for the Holy Spirit to shine a light on darkness. We will need to partner with Him, so He can clean us up and guide us into all truth.

The reason so many of us are lost, anxious, confused, depressed, and dissatisfied is because we refuse to check ourselves. We are puffed up with pride and refuse to allow God full access to perform a work in our soul.

If we are walking in darkness while claiming to love Christ, we are delusional, according to scripture. Your identity is found in the truth (light) and not in the dark (lies).

Darkness warps our vision and identity. Try walking in the dark woods or jungle with no flashlight. It wouldn’t make sense to do this because you can’t see what’s around you. It would only be wise to move forward when daylight shines through the next day. When light exposes the darkness, only then can you see what is lurking out there?

Soulful, it’s vital that you are secure in your salvation. Like if you were to die today, could you say with confidence where you’ll end up?

To uncover the mysteries, secrets, treasures, and unsearchable things of God, we must be dedicated to seeking Him.

John 8:31-32 NIV says, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Christ will indeed illuminate your soul (mind, will, and emotions) with His wisdom when you sit under His light. Check out these scriptures that reveal truth about you. God’s Word is light, as Jesus is the Living Word. Not only are these truths unbreakable—they expose the darkness:

TRUTH #1 GOD CALLS YOU HIS FRIEND

John 5:14-15 NIV You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.

LIE: The devil wants you to believe you are not worthy of having a real and reliable friend.

TRUTH #2 You’re eternally redeemed by the blood of the Lamb

Ephesians 1:7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us.

LIE: The devil wants you to experience guilt and shame ongoing. He wants you always to question if Jesus’ blood is enough to redeem you.

TRUTH #3 YOU’RE A ROYAL PRIESTHOOD

1 Peter 2:9 NIV But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s treasured possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

LIE: You’re inadequate, unworthy, and unwanted. After all, you’ve gone through in your past; you’re too broken to be of any value.

TRUTH #4 GOD LOVES YOU UNCONDITIONALLY

Romans 8:38-39 KJV, For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

LIE: You’ve sinned too many times. God does not love you anymore. He wants nothing to do with you. You need to work harder if you wish for God to love you. The harder you work, it never will win God’s love.

TRUTH # 5 YOUR SINS ARE FORGIVEN

1 John 1: 9 NIV says, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

LIE: God cannot forgive your sins. They are too bad. Nobody and surely not God will ever forgive you.

Truth #6 You’re Seated in Heavenly Places

Ephesians 2:6-7 NIV, And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

LIE: You’re homeless and poor. You have poor credit, you don’t own any possessions, and you filed bankruptcy. You’re a nobody if you don’t have excellent credit, success, money, and popularity.

Soulful, when you seek God and allow the Word of God to perform a work in you, you’ll experience transformation. Don’t believe the lies this world, the devil, and the flesh have sold you. Your spiritual life is where the wealth is. When you mature spiritually, you’ll know more about your identity.

Soul Actions:

Do not be deceived. We cannot walk in darkness and claim to know God.

Allow the Holy Spirit to guide you into all truth. When He shines light on your sins and darkness, confess and repent of them immediately.

Make every effort to seek God. He will reveal Himself to you and shine light on your identity. Recommended reading is Romans Chapter 6-8.
