The law of attraction and manifesting is prevalent among Christians. The law of attraction crept into modern churches and Christian media outlets decades ago, and many babes and seasoned saints are unaware of the deception. The occult practice of this attraction and mind science is tied heavily through the popular documentary—The Secret.

In this Era of hustle culture, entrepreneurship, and technological innovation, it’s easy to get swept away into the wrong ideology. Popular business books, sales seminars, and life coaches use these rituals and teach them to the masses.

Many pastors who lean towards modernism and progressiveness weave new age and mysticism so easily through their sermons by mixing them with scriptures. Unless you search the scriptures like the Bereans, you’ll find yourself hooked up into the net of false doctrine like a fish. The Christians that get yoked up into the new thought systems of thinking are unaware; it’s not until they mature through sanctification that they develop and discern more and more spiritually.

If you profess Christ as Savior and Lord, I pray that something in this post can help you uncover any blind spots related to the law of attraction.

Law of Attraction

We cannot discuss the law of attraction until we consider New Thought. Wikipedia says that the New Thought movement (also Higher Thought) is a spiritual movement coalesced in the United States in the early 19th century. New Thought was preceded by “ancient thought,” accumulated wisdom and philosophy from a variety of origins, such as Ancient Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Chinese, Taoist, Vedic, Hindu, and Buddhist cultures and their related belief systems, primarily regarding the interaction between thought, belief, consciousness in the human mind, and the effects of these within and beyond the human mind.

In other words, new thought is the foundation from which the law of attraction stems, and new thought is a spiritual movement that is part of the occult.

According to Wikipedia, “the Law of Attraction is a pseudoscience based on the belief that positive or negative thoughts bring positive or negative experiences into a person’s life. The belief is based on the idea that people and their thoughts are made from “pure energy” and that a process of like energy attracting like energy exists through which a person can improve their health, wealth, and personal relationships.”

New Hidden Wisdom

According to the website New Thought Wisdom, “the law of attraction is one powerful principle embraced by new thought. The natural concept of this universal law originated centuries ago and can even be found in the scriptures of the Holy Bible and other ancient texts. Jesus, Buddha and many other spiritual and inspirational leaders throughout the times taught the principle law of attraction, and many modern business leaders and coaches credit this law as being the foundation for personal self-development and success”.

Did you just read that soulful? The lies!

Do you see how this writer lied on God—Jesus our Lord—and grouped our King and Savior into the same sentence of a created human—Buddha?

Lies and more lies!

The Holy Scriptures do NOT teach the law of attraction, and I advise you to run—not walk—away from any pastor that teaches that Jesus taught this in the pulpit. We are to defend the faith against this destructive heresy. Jesus the perfect, sinless, God-man cannot be grouped in with such nonsense. Our only hope for success now and through all eternity is Jesus Christ, our Lord.

John 14:5-6 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Jesus clarified with his disciple Thomas that there is no other way to the Father God except through Christ. His way is truth and life.

The Success Trap

The world’s view of success is a trap. Therefore, we must define success through what God says success is. If you’ve been following me, you know I am looking forward to sharing how I got trapped in my young-adult walk as a believer in some of these teachings. I got entrapped as I pursued success in songwriting and magazine publishing. When I started Cure for Bare Walls, my art company, these wrong teachings slowly worked out of me. As I advance in the study of discernment teachings, the Holy Spirit reveals tiny fragments left behind and areas that need addressing.

It’s no surprise that God has graced me to teach against the law of attraction and educate other believers on the truth. Romans 8:28 reminds me of how God works everything out for His good. He uses everything we went through ultimately for His glory.

Proverbs 14:12 NKJV says, There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.

Through Christ’s success, we already have victory. We are more than conquers through Him who loves us and calls us according to His purposes (Romans 8:31-39).

As I previously mentioned, the way to your best life now can seem significant. Still, many people will end up in hell, eternally separated from Christ due to their desire to obtain perishable things. Likewise, if you’re a believer and you’ve been on this path, please repent and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you into all truth. I get that the church you may have heard this from seemed right, but they are teaching lies.

The Authority of Scripture

For the professing believer that calls on the name of Christ, please hear me loud and clear. We are to follow who the Bible says God is.

2 Corinthians 13:5 NIV says,  Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test? And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test.

Examine yourself and see if you are in the faith. Analyze, investigate, access, and question if your life is starting to line up with and modeled after Christ. Then if you are not clear on who He is, please start reading the four Gospels. Start with Matthew, then John, and thirdly read Luke and Mark.

Additionally, I recommend diving into some systematic theology. Our proper understanding of the deity of The Father, Christ the Son, and the Holy Spirit (the Trinity and Godhead) is essential to our faith. A thought system that robs Jesus and the Holy Spirit of deity is a system we can’t support.

Be Clear on Who God is

If we do not know who the God of the Bible is, we cannot understand who Jesus is.

Jesus is God and born of a virgin:

  • Matthew 1:21 NIV says, But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[f] because he will save his people from their sins.”

Jesus is eternal:

  • John 1:1-3 NIV says,  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

Jesus, our Savior, died and rose again the 3rd day:

  • 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 NIV, For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

New Age Spiritually Up Close

Here are some well-known phrases commonly used regarding the law of attraction.

  • The universe, the divine, higher power
  • Manifest, Vibes, vibrating, and energy
  • Meditate, mindlessness, and center
  • Karma, 3rd eye, and chakras
  • Affirmations
  • Consciousness and Christ consciousness
  • Positive and negative thinking
  • Speak into the universe
  • I Will and I Am
  • Spiritual but not religious

Just because someone uses these words does not mean they are practicing new-age religion, but they are, more often than not. I know I left some words out. If you can comment below with others, this will help the readers.

Is Manifesting for Christians

For Bible Believing Christians, no, you should not practice the law of attraction for manifesting things into your life.

God is your provider and source—not the universe!

A quick Google image search for the term manifesting will lead you to many new-age images. These pictures don’t represent the mind of Christ in any form or fashion.

The word manifest in its proper context is acceptable because it also means reveal. Instead of using the word manifest, I prefer fruition—as believers, we bear fruit as we abide in the vine—the One true God.

Genesis 1 and 2 speak of creation, and we don’t worship God’s creation but Him as our Creator. We pray to God about our concerns and desires; we don’t try to manifest them through the occult and the law of attraction manipulation.

Universe Worship

If everything God created worships Him, why must human beings rebel and reverence His creation before worshiping the Creator? People worship physical attributes, money, houses, vacations, fame, and success above Mighty God.

Psalms 148:3-13 NIV says,

Praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord from the heavens;
praise him in the heights above.
Praise him, all his angels;
praise him, all his heavenly hosts.
Praise him, sun and moon;
praise him, all you shining stars.
Praise him, you highest heavens
and you waters above the skies.

Let them praise the name of the Lord,
for at his command they were created,
and he established them for ever and ever—
he issued a decree that will never pass away.

Praise the Lord from the earth,
you great sea creatures and all ocean depths,
lightning and hail, snow and clouds,
stormy winds that do his bidding,
you mountains and all hills,
fruit trees and all cedars,
10 wild animals and all cattle,
small creatures and flying birds,
11 kings of the earth and all nations,
you princes and all rulers on earth,
12 young men and women,
old men and children.

This passage is magnificent! Just in case you forgot, God owns everything, and everything owes Him their adoration. Praise the Lord—praise Him forever.

Continuing with the Law of Attraction

If you practice the law of attraction, know you’ve opened yourself up to spiritual oppression and set yourself against God. You stopped depending on His sufficiency and sovereignty and made yourself into a little god—this is the sin of idolatry.

Gurus like Napolean Hill, Deepak Chopra, Oprah Winfrey, Iylanya Vanzant, Ekart Tolley, and many others unleashed a wave of attraction thinking—but the true God has the cure.

Romans 1:21-22 NIV says,  because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools,

These people use everything God has made and act as if they don’t know Him. They credit things to the divine, personal wisdom, and their strong minds.

In conclusion

Just remember that the law of attraction moves you away from total dependency on the Holy Spirit to accomplish things independently. However, there is nothing wrong with setting goals and making plans as long as the motivation behind them is godly.

Soul Actions:

Worship God and consult Him on your planning.

Meditate on God’s Word after you read it so you can know the voice of God.

Pray for the desires of your heart as opposed to trying to obtain them through the law of attraction practices.

Soulful, I appreciate you reading this to the end. If this teaching has blessed you in any way, please share it with two friends. You can also download the Dream Big Goal Setting Guide I created right here.
